Essential Tips for a Successful Newborn Photoshoot
Welcoming your little one into the world is one of the most special moments of your life, and capturing those precious early days with a newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to preserve those memories forever. As a seasoned newborn photographer in Oxfordshire, I know how important it is to make this experience enjoyable and stress-free for both you and your baby. To help you prepare, I’ve put together some essential tips that will ensure your newborn photography session is smooth, relaxed, and successful.
1. Feed Your Baby 10-15 Minutes Before the Session
One of the most important steps in preparing for your newborn photoshoot is ensuring your baby is well-fed just before the session begins. Babies are typically more content and sleepy after a good feed, which is perfect for capturing those peaceful, sleepy poses. I recommend feeding your baby 10-15 minutes before the photoshoot so they are full, happy, and comfortable, meaning we can get started on capturing your families love story straight away.
2. Review the Welcome and Style Guide
In the days leading up to your session, you’ll receive a welcome and style guide from me through the post. These guides are designed to help you prepare for the photoshoot by offering tips on what to expect, how to dress, and how to create a calm environment for your little one. Taking the time to read through both guides will give you a good idea of the flow of the session and how best to prepare your baby (and yourselves) for the shoot.
The style guide will also provide you with wardrobe suggestions for both you and your family. However, you’ll also have full access to my luxurious client wardrobe, which includes soft, timeless pieces that complement the natural tones I use in my newborn photography. Coordinating outfits that reflect the soft, neutral tones will help create cohesive and beautiful images.
3. Keep the Room Warm and Cozy
Newborns are happiest when they’re warm and snuggled, so it’s a good idea to make sure the room is cosy for your baby during the photoshoot. My studio in Oxfordshire is specifically designed for newborn sessions, with plenty of blankets and heaters to keep your little one comfortable. (Heat leaves a baby’s body quicker than adults as they are so tiny so they do lose heat quickly). However, if we are doing the session at your home, try to keep the room a bit warmer than usual to ensure your baby stays content, especially if your baby will be wearing an outfit that has no arms or legs.
4. Stay Relaxed and Calm
Newborns can sense your energy, so the calmer and more relaxed you are, the more at ease your baby will feel during the session. I understand that the idea of a photoshoot may seem overwhelming, especially as sleep deprived new parents, but rest assured that I have years of experience working with newborns and know exactly how to create a serene atmosphere. From soothing your baby with gentle movements to patiently waiting for the perfect shot, I will ensure everything runs smoothly.
Trust that your baby’s safety and comfort are my top priorities. We’ll take breaks for feeding, cuddles, or nappy changes as needed. My studio is designed to feel like home, offering a warm and inviting environment where you can relax, enjoy a cup of tea, and let me take care of the rest.
5. Prepare to Take Breaks
A newborn photoshoot can take up to 2-3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, comforting, and changing. Don’t feel rushed! It’s perfectly normal for your baby to need some extra time to settle, and I’m more than happy to pause as often as necessary. The beauty of newborn photography lies in capturing those quiet, tender moments, and that requires patience.
So, if your baby gets fussy or needs extra attention, don’t worry! This is all part of the process, and we’ll make sure to capture stunning images no matter what.
A successful newborn photoshoot is all about preparation, patience, and trust. As your dedicated newborn photographer in Oxfordshire, I am here to guide you every step of the way to make this experience as special as possible. By following these few helpful tips, you’ll not only feel reassured your baby is comfortable, but you’ll also enjoy the process knowing you’re in safe hands. After all, this is a celebration of your new arrival, and the memories we capture will be cherished for years to come.
If you haven’t yet scheduled your newborn photoshoot, I’d love to welcome you to my Oxfordshire studio where you can enjoy a relaxed, peaceful, baby-led session, full of authentic and tender moments.
